The major component of glass is Sand (silicon dioxide) This is mixed with other ingredients like soda ash (sodium carbonate) and limestone (calcium carbonate) to lower the melting temperature of the sand and promote optical clarity of the finished glass product.
What is the difference between Clear Glass and Low Iron Glass?
Standard Clear Glass has a slightly green tinge to it due to the iron content in the sand. Low Iron Glass contains ¼ approx. of the iron content in standard Clear Glass which gives it a crystal-clear appearance.
Painted splashbacks are either made from Clear or Low Iron Glass. Neutral and light colours are painted onto Low Iron glass because the crystal-clear appearance shows the true colour. Clear Glass is used for darker colours and any colour can be matched onto either glass type.
